In 1958, college scholarships awarded by local organizations to St. Joseph County high school seniors were scarce. Through the vision and actions of some civic leaders and Chamber of Commerce members, monies were brought together into one fund and The Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County, Inc. was formed.

The Foundation is not-for-profit and is privately funded by personal and corporate contributions, bequests and memorial gifts. Our purpose is to gather funds and award them through an objective application and selection process. St. Joseph County college-bound high school students graduating from any public, accredited private or parochial school are eligible.

What began with one award of $750 in 1959 has grown to 105 students being given $233,000 for the 2009-10 school year. We are proud of the more than 3,800 students who have received over $3.7 million in assistance.

In addition to financial assistance, the Foundation also provides students with a sponsor or mentor. One of our directors is assigned to be their guide through the college experience, the "friendly voice" in times of confusion and another link with home. This person also serves as the student's link to the Awards Committee at the time of reapplication for additional scholarship money.

Our recipients can be found in the job market at the local, regional, national and international level pursuing a wide range of successful careers.
